Donations Down This Year

Posted: Updated:

Hunger relief, housing, and Christmas assistance, those are just a few of the services offered by the Minot branch of the Salvation Army, and all of those programs are funded by donations this time of year.

The Salvation Army has raised just $50 thousand through their belling ringing campaign this holiday season.  That's 28 percent below the total it had at this time last year, and the $50 thousand is drastically less than its 2013 Bell Ringing goal of $264 thousand.

One reason donations are down is because of a lack of volunteers, "Over the years we've found that just placing a kettle at the site doesn't do much of anything.  It will go for 10 hours and only have a few pennies in it.  The real magic happens when we have a smiling person there ringing the bell, wearing the aprons, smiling, greeting people.  That's when the donations really seem to come in," said Tim Nauta, Captain of the Salvation Army in Minot.

If you're interested in volunteering to be a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, you can call (701) 838-8925.
