Century High Group Donates to Resource Center

Posted: Updated:

Christmas is just a couple weeks away, and some Century High School students are doing all they can to make sure those in need are able to have a good holiday.

Presents fill Mrs. Beaudoin's English class at Century, and students have been busy wrapping them for the past several days.

"I got really good at wrapping. I've wrapped like a ton of gifts. And yea, everybody's been helping out," says student Amber Jordan.

The gifts are going to several families at the Abused Adult Resource Center. And this year they raised about $9,000 more than ever before.

"I think it says a lot about our community. It says so much about our students, and it's nice that people see the good that students do," says Beaudoin. "I mean personal checks for $75, not family money, it's kids who work and donate."

And for one student helping out, it hits close to home.

"I know what it is like to be in that spot where you don't, where you need help, and you're not able to have your own Christmas," says student Sabrina Weinschrott. "It's just really amazing to see everything that goes to these families."

In fact, for many of the students seeing what these kids ask for puts things into perspective.

"Growing up, Christmas is always like, I want this and that, and this, and I want the Barbie, and I want the dreamhouse. And these kids are asking for, like, coats and school stuff, and like, kitchenware," says Jordan.

"And everything we do for the Abused Adult Resource Center is new. And I think that's symbolic, because it's a new beginning," says Beaudoin. "Some people are still in the shelters, some have found housing though, but they're starting all over. It's a new life, a new beginning."

And she says she's glad her students can see what it's like to help people start that new life.
