Sports Spotlight: Ben Weisbeck

Posted: Updated:

It ended up being the best game of the Super A, but it was in the first round, and unfortunately for the Saints, it was a loss to Shanley. Disappointment can provide strong motivation. But you need more than motivation, you need talent, and St.Mary's has a returning 1st team All State.

Last year's first round loss to Fargo Shanley in state tournament still stings Ben Weisbeck, but he acknowledges it is not something he and his teammates can obsess over.

"We try not to look into the past too much. You have to concentrate on every single game and the next game. But definitely a driving force is to get that state championship," says Weisbeck.

On paper, the Saints are as good as anyone in the state, nine players return from last year's team, but there is no question that Weisbeck is the engine that makes them go.

"We look at him for a lot. He is our all-stater returning, so we ask and expect a lot from him," says coach Brent DeKok.

"He definitely gets you better everyday you play against him because he is so good. Definitely keeps you on your toes," says Scott Nagel.

And his play has earned him a scholarship to Augustana College in South Dakota, a decision he's glad he made prior to the season.

"The recruiting process was pretty stressful but I am sure it is for everyone. What really kind of got me with Augie was it was one of those deals where once you know, you know," says Weisbeck. "I went there, and I felt comfortable there."

Weisbeck is also a standout on the soccer field. He attributes some of his success on the court to playing soccer.

"It's just like Steve Nash says, it opens up your court vision and being able to see everything around you."

That definitely helps explain Weisbeck's steady improvement over his career at St. Mary's.

"One of my goals coming into my eighth grade year was to play Varsity, and I remember everyday after practice just working and working," Weisbeck says.  "So, the last four years have definitely been a fun ride."

The ride isn't quite over yet, but if it's up to Weisbeck, it'll end in Minot with him and his teammates cutting down the nets.

Weisbeck & the Saints beat the Deacons in the season opener last Saturday.

They host Belcourt on Friday.
