Sanford Health Offers Rehab on Easy Street

Posted: Updated:

What better way to recover from a stroke or injury, than in a place that feels like home? There is such a place inside Bismarck's Sanford Health that looks like a neighborhood, but is actually a rehab center.

Easy Street allows therapists to help patients, who have suffered a stroke or other injury, to practice their mobility in real life situations without having to leave the hospital. Some of the modules inside Easy Street include a grocery store with real products, a garage with a real car, so patients can practice getting in and out, and a life-sized apartment.

"We have a fully functional kitchen inside the apartment that has a bedroom," says therapist, Aimee Volk. "It also has a dining room as well as a living room. We also have facilities for the bathroom."

And, it's the realistic simulations inside Easy Street that really allow the therapists to give the best care possible.

"A simple act of getting into bed," says Volk. "Breaking that down. What do they need to be able to do? Do they need to use their strength? Do they need to use their legs more? Do they need to use arms?"

Denis Nieow is one of those patients who needs help with strength. He's been an Easy Street patient for about two weeks, and he says his therapy sessions have been pretty encouraging.

"When you lay there and you can't get up and all of a sudden you're walking out with a walker, or whatever, you've got a different frame of mind all the way," says Nieow. "And then instead of going to the nursing home, you get to go home, so I've got something to shoot for. No pain, no gain."

It's a unique service that puts patients in a setting with a little local charm, but most important, offers them the quality care they need.

Easy Street has been in operation since 1993.
