Winter Weather Affects Oil Production

Posted: Updated:

The wind chill falls to almost forty degrees below zero,  and oil field workers are still on the job. And the cold temperatures aren't just a hazard for employees.

Companies face logistical challenges in subzero temperatures, mostly involving fracking. Ice and snow make it harder to get water to a site. It also takes longer to heat fluids and keep them warm, causing an impact on December's production numbers.

Road closures can also cause major issues for well operators, as equipment is unable to get to a well pad sometimes for several days.

Energy reporter Mary Cate Mannion has more at 10.
