Zoo Prepares for Winter

Posted: Updated:

Battling harsh weather can take a toll on the body. But, it's not only people who are affected by below-zero temperatures.

Staff at the Roosevelt Park Zoo spent the last week preparing their facility and their animals for the current weather conditions.  Every winter, African and Asian animals are moved to their indoor pens, while North American Animals like wolves and reindeer can adapt to the frigid temperatures.

For those animals kept indoors, it takes more than just a warm room to keep them going through the cold week and the long winter.

"Our keepers are very good about using enrichment, which is different ways, different treats, interaction with the keepers, maybe some toys, things like that for the animals to look at, eat, play with, to keep them a little more stimulated. And they change those everyday," says veterinarian Dr. Ann Olson, Roosevelt Park Zoo.

Staff expects renovations to begin soon on an effort to convert the old education center into a new aviary exhibit that would hold more than 100 birds, and could offer extra space to house more animals during the winter months.
