Traffic Accidents Increase Over Winter Months

Posted: Updated:

If you must travel, be careful. Getting stranded or in an accident this time of year can be deadly. The Highway Patrol never takes the day off, because troopers are looking out for our safety no matter the condition of the roads.

Many people claim to be used to driving in these conditions, the first major snowfall is always a busy time for officers as motorists get back into the swing of winter driving. If you've been on the road recently, you've probably had to be more cautious during your commute.

"It's really about the other drivers. You always have to watch out for them, too, because there's a lot of people that don't know how to drive [on] these roads," says Tali Norby, Highway Patrol.

Norby says she's lived here long enough to know how to drive in the snow, but it's not fun.

"They're icy, I don't have good snow tires yet but I still get around."

As many drivers get used to the conditions, the highway patrol is responding to more accidents across the state.

"It's always interesting. The start of winter, we see a lot of crashes within the city, you know, out on the interstate, too," says Sgt. Tom Iverson. "Kind of statewide. We've really seen an increase in crashes and time spent for our troopers responding to these crashes. [It] definitely takes up a lot of time."

Between Monday and Wednesday, there were 18 highway accidents in the southwest region of the state, which includes Bismarck and Dickinson.

Ten were property crashes, six injury crashes, and two hit and runs.

"Things get really hectic on scene on some of those crashes, especially within the city limits, maybe on the Bismarck Expressway or something. The traffic tends to get bottle-necked in the areas. So, it can really create a hazard when traffic is backed up like that," says Sgt. Iverson.

One person has died due to the winter weather.
