Bismarck Businesses Profit from Snowy Weather

Posted: Updated:

All the snow that's piling up is good news for those in the business of removing it.

With more than five inches of snowfall overnight snow shovels and snow blowers are working overtime all over town.

"My husband was out this morning with the snow blower and he does the neighbors next door too, little grandpa and grandma. So I figure I better do my part when I get home. It's a partnership, you got to do it together," says Bismarck resident Sharon Derwin.

And since she's lived in Bismarck for more than forty years this is nothing new.

"You're used to it. You just get out there and do it, you know like I said as long as it's not freezing. It's the hands and the feet, if you can keep them warm you're good to go. You can cover up all this other stuff," says Derwin.

She isn't the only one with a system down. Faron Kastner has owned a snow removal business for more than ten years and says it's just that time of year.

"Vacation time is over, it's time to get back to work," says Faron Kastner.

Which is exactly what they did, well before the sun even came up.

"We started at about 3:30 this morning and took about a half hour for lunch. Other than that try to get all the businesses done first before they get busy," says Kastner.

Then they moved on to condos and residential areas, keeping them busy most of the day. But they've had a few days to get used to the long hours.

"It was busy you know the last few days too with the sand salt and stuff like that," says Kastner.

And with winter here, he will likely stay busy the next few months.

Many stores in Bismarck and Mandan have sold out of salt, so you may want to call ahead.
