Classes Begin at Ramstad Middle School

Posted: Updated:

It's a big day for staff and students at Erik Ramstad Middle School.  Today marks the first day of classes in the new building.

There may have been snow to shovel on the sidewalks early this morning, but for the Erik Ramstad Rockets, Mother Nature never stands in their way.

Ramstad Middle School Principal Ione Sautner says, "This is a great day that we've been waiting for a long time and I know the excitement is very high for staff and students.  We've just been looking forward to this all year long and knowing that this day was going to come sometime during the year and we're glad it's today."

After the flood destroyed the school in 2011, Ramstad was forced to relocate and hold classes in the Municipal Auditorium for about 2 years.  But, today, they are starting a new chapter, in a brand new building.

"Yes, the staff, students, and the community has went through a lot with the flood, but out of it came something that's very remarkable," says Sautner.

Rachelle Lamoureus, 77th grade Geography Teacher at Ramstad Middle School says, "I think we are so excited and just so happy to be in our new home that maybe there's a few of us who are a bit nervous.  I'm so looking forward to it.  I can hardly wait."

"What was your thought when you walked in the school for the first time?  I was speechless," says Adisynn Widdel, 77th grader at Ramstad Middle School.

Students were welcomed by staff and teachers as they walked the red carpet to their classes in the new building for the first time, but they're trying to make everyone feel comfortable in the new environment.

Sautner says, "We are trying to maintain as much as of a normal day as possible, making sure that we take time for the students, but also move ahead with our academics because every minute is precious."

"We really want to instill in the kids is that this is the first group that gets to be here and so, we're going to do fun things and a lot of things are planned with the kids and we really can do some things that we weren't able to at the auditorium," says Lamoureus.

Probably one of the things the students are the most worried about is using a locker, so they've added time in their schedules to practice combinations.

Lamoureus says, "We have a whole group of middle school kids that haven't used a locker before, so they're nervous."

While there were special activities going on to celebrate the new building, teachers, and staff are hoping the energy transpires into the classroom.

"You can just tell the excitement is in the air," says Lamoureus.  Many of the kids haven't seen the new school yet, so this is their first glimpse of it.  It's just so exciting."

For staff and students, it's a day they will never forget.

Sautner says there are no major areas that weren't completed.
