Businesses Prepare for Winter Driving Season

Posted: Updated:

You've already been cautioned about the slick roads, but that's not just causing problems for drivers.

It's definitely slippery, and it's only going to get worse over the next two days. And while you might be worried about skidding on the ice, body shops and insurance companies are also worried about just how many accidents they're going to have to help fix.

It might not look solid, but don't be fooled. The slush on the road is hiding a lot of ice.

"The main roads seemed to be alright, the highway looks good, the side roads are icy, and parking lots are a nightmare," says driver Paul Narveson.

People have been shuffling around, trying to avoid slipping or skidding, in these winter driving conditions.

"It's very slippery out. We're supposed to get more rain and snow I hear, so I just hope the roads are nice and good and clear enough. But, this is to be expected because it's the first weekend after Thanksgiving so we always get this sort of weather," says traveler Jacklyn Tweeten.

And this sort of weather doesn't just give drivers problems. Auto body shops are getting ready for the busy winter season.

"Every year the first snow or the first icy weather condition we get, it's just chaos. The weather's going to bring a lot more people with curb hits, people rear-ending people, all sorts of just fender-benders and possibly rollovers and stuff like that," says Ryan Fode, Kupper Auto Body Repair.

And once your damaged car goes to the shop, the insurance agent see a lot of activity, too.

"The next couple days it's going to be busy with accidents," says insurance agent Terry Richter.

And it hasn't taken long for Richter to hear from his clients.

"It'll definitely increase our activity as far as claims, and we've seen it already starting this morning," says Richter.

Richter says if you do get in an accident, the best thing you can do is take pictures of the damage right away. But you can also try to avoid that situation altogether by just driving a little slower.
