DLB Poised for a Big Year

Posted: Updated:

Perhaps no team in the area is coming in with higher expectations on the basketball court than the Des Lacs Burlington Lakers.

Returning most of their roster from last season, DLB is has a very good chance of reaching the state tournament. Chris Duke and Tanner Holte come back for the Lakers. Even those two are the main contributors, coach told me the bench has improved considerably. They need that depth if they want to avenge a 22 point loss to Rugby in the region tournament last year. Everyone's looking up at DLB and the players are ready.

"Teams are always going after the top dogs. We're ready for that challenge. If they want to try us, we're going to be very good this year. We're going to have a great bench and everything else," Brett Schaefer says.

"When everybody's looking at you, you got a target on your back. You're getting everybody's best effort so we're going to have to come out and play every single game," guard Cole Edwards says.

Doug Wagner has been at the helm for the better part of three decades now at DLB. He knows just how important experience is, but it's not everything.

"I think experience helps a ton, but we have to keep ourselves from skipping things early in the season. We still need to lay the foundation whether we have a lot of people back or not. We're working on the fundamentals and just the basics. We're pleased to have a lot of experience back, for sure," Wagner says.

The Lakers open up their season December 2nd when they travel to Tioga.
