Holiday Weight Gain

Posted: Updated:

From the turkey and stuffing to the egg nog and pumpkin pie, there are a lot of temptations during this time of year.

On average, Americans gain about 5-10 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

But as long as you stay active, you can eat what you enjoy.

"Don't put yourself down if you have a little bit more than you normally would, but take the opportunity when you can to get out and move a little bit, be active outside, enjoy the weather if it's nice out," said Brookins.  "If you're inside, take the opportunity to do some different things just to kind of not stay on the couch the whole time," says Trinity Health Exercise Physiologist Kyra Brookins.

Brookins recommends parking further away from the door when you're shopping to increase physical fitness in your daily routine.

Trinity is offering a holiday fitness challenge at the Y in Minot to maintain, not gain.  The eight-week program is being offered now until the first of the New Year.
