Bakken Radioactive Waste is Transported to Montana

Posted: Updated:

After drilling and fracking a well in the Bakken, the oil and gas are collected for sale, leaving behind radioactive waste. The waste is in the form of tank sludge, filter socks and liquids with uranium, which can't be disposed in North Dakota.

Now, an oilfield waste landfill about 28 miles from Glendive, Montana, near the small town of Lindsay, is taking in about half of its waste from North Dakota.

Before the Oaks Disposal opened, operators in the Bakken had to send waste to Colorado, Idaho, Texas or other states.

"The state does not have any requirements in place for tracking or record keeping for radioactive waste materials. Some states have those rules in place but North Dakota doesn't at this time. Most of the companies keep their own records of how much material is generated and where it is taken," says director Scott Radig, Division of Waste Management.

Mary Cate Mannion will have more from the owner of the Oak Disposal regarding the policies and set up of the landfill.
