Salvation Army Gearing Up for Thanksgiving

Posted: Updated:

The Salvation Army is notorious nationwide for providing food, warmth, and company for those in need, especially throughout the holiday season. The Williston Salvation Army is no exception. They're gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving dinner.

"It's open for anyone in the community to come. Whether they're here looking for work, or if they grew up here, or whether they are elderly and just want to be with someone. This is a wonderful opportunity to come and fellowship with individuals and we also have delivery opportunities if needed" explained Captain Joshua Stansbury of the Williston Salvation Army.

Captain Joshua adds that the Thanksgiving dinner is a wonderful service opportunity for families or individuals who want to be more involved in the community.

"People have made it their thanksgiving tradition to come and volunteer at our Thanksgiving meal. There are families that bring their kids, they come and serve or do whatever we need to help out for the dinner. Sometimes we feed more volunteers than individuals eating but it's just a wonderful time for all" said Captain Stansbury.

While the Thanksgiving effort Is running smoothly, the Kettle Bell Campaign is struggling as 1700 volunteer hours still need to be filled between now and Christmas. Captain Joshua reminds volunteers that their few hours makes a bigger difference than they would expect.

"When they give a few hours and that change goes into the kettle- cause we've tried putting kettles out without people manning them before and they don't do well. So when they're at the kettle and they raise money, that change really affects lives here in Williston. It's a small part to helping a much bigger picture to provide the many services that we do" said Stansbury.

Ringing a bell for the Salvation Army is easy work and a good way to get into the holiday spirit by helping the less fortunate in your community.

"I issue a challenge to the people who aren't ringing the bells at this time for a good cause of helping people during the holiday season" said Dennis Severson Jr, a long time bell ringer.

To sign up to ring a bell visit registertoring.com or call 572-4222.
