Yes or No, Get Out and Vote

Posted: Updated:

Whether it's to vote yes or no, the Minot Public School administration is urging every homeowner in the school district to get out and cast their ballot December 10th.

Voters are being asked to decide on a $125 million dollar bond issue that would renovate existing schools, establish a new high school and elementary school and add much needed security and safety measures to Minot Public Schools.  Today, MPS staff spoke with Minot State Students about how the bond could affect those graduating in the future, if it's approved.  "Though they may not feel it today, they will have an impact, the bond issue will have an impact on them for 5 years to come.  So it's a decision everyone needs to be involved in," said Jim Rostad, President of the Minot Public School Board.

If approved, the $125 million dollars would be sold over 4 years.  Overall, there would be a $38.00 Dollar increase in school property taxes on a $200 Thousand Dollar home.  The total would still be less than homeowners paid in school property taxes in 2012, thanks to a Property Tax Relief Bill passed during the last legislative session.  "We have 720 some students in Kindergarten, and we'll be graduating 400 and some.  That alone will create growth in the district, as larger classes move forward in the district.  You take the number of students that are in Kindergarten, First and Second grade, compared to what's in 6th, 7th and 8th right now, there's a difference of about 400 students," stated Scott Moum, Business Manager for Minot Public Schools.

The Minot Public School bond vote will be held on December 10th.  Polls will open at 7 am to 7 PM at eleven MPS elementary schools throughout the city.
