Principal Reads in Pajamas

Posted: Updated:

In the technology world that we live in, there are many different ways for kids to learn. But nothing can compare to cracking up a good book, and reading about history, fiction, or a good comedy. And that was the message one District 8 principal was trying to send to his students today.

When students came to school at Garden Valley today, they something out of the ordinary. Their principal wasn't following his normal morning routine.

"In order to complete the challenge, I have to read from eight o'clock to t o'clock today, the whole school day," says Garden Valley Principal Steve Guglich.

The principal's challenge is part of Book Its!, national young readers week. Principals have to read all day, and be visible to students while doing so.

"What I want to do is I want to show students that reading is comfortable, it's not a chore. It's a privilege. We can actually have the opportunity to read and enjoy it," says Guglich.

Students at Garden Valley are happy their principal is drawing attention towards reading because it's something they like to do.

"It just takes you away from everything. If you're upset, you can just melt away into a book," says sixth grader Linea Peterson.

"When you read, sometimes they're funny things, sometimes they're bad things. I mostly like the funny books, like the Garfield's," says second grader Gavin Perkins.

Another student says it's nice that Mr. Guglich enjoys to read because it will benefit her and her classmates down the road.

"He's trying to help us be educated, and he's trying to help us do more things. We'll be able to go to a good school, and get educated and have a good life," says sixth grader Asia Evanson.

Mr. Guglich says reading is linked to problem solving, critical thinking, and writing which are all good for students. They also bring out the imagination.

"When you're reading a book, without the inclusion of pictures that kind of taint your imagination, you're there. You're mind is working, your mind is imagining these characters," says Guglich.

Guglich says it's important for kids to see not only him reading, but all adults.
