Interim Chancellor Visits Williston State College

Posted: Updated:

Dr. Larry Skogen, the newly appointed Interim Chancellor of the North Dakota University System is using this opportunity to usher in a new era of trust and transparency in the educational system.

Dr. Skogen visited Williston State College today and spoke of using the "Pathways to Student Success Plan" to help achieve the best educational system for North Dakota students.

"I view that the Pathways Plan was laid out as sort of a 50,000 foot level looking down as this is how we can address educational excellence within the state. As you bring your plane down closer and you start seeing trees and grass, we find that's there's a lot of details we need to workout," says Skogen

Dr. Skogen spoke of how he plans to evaluate the pathway to student success plan to determine what the needs are of the North Dakota university system.

"We need to make data driven decisions relative to pathways and that we do it collaboratively. That we sit down with the presidents with their staffs and we design this plan to the best benefit of our students, because in the final analysis it's about helping our students achieve what they want to achieve in life."

While there is work to be done, the North Dakota University System has made incredible progress in recent years in regards to preparing students for available jobs.

"Jobs, now, in North Dakota, and many employees that are needed, need to have science, technology, engineering and math skills. And so, North Dakota is number two in the nation in the percentage of degrees in those areas. So, were doing great work in meeting those needs," says Skogen.

This is all part of the effort made by the NDUS to determine the states areas of need and in turn develop programs in those areas to train future workers.

Dr. Skogen mentioned how impressed he is with the drastic changes and improvements made within Williston State College.
