MSU Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Posted: Updated:

With four reservations in North Dakota, Native American Heritage can be seen throughout the state.  November may be known for Thanksgiving, but the eleventh month of the year is also Native American Heritage Month.

And to help celebrate, Minot State University is hosting a Native American Cultural Celebration this week.  It's a chance for people to come and experience and learn about the different tribes and cultures that are represented here in North Dakota.  Throughout the week MSU's Native American Cultural Awareness club will have speakers, presenters and exhibits of Native American success, covering different topics from education to cultural respect.

"You're going to hear a lot of different perspectives of history, contemporary, identity, education.  Just different perspectives from some really unique, very strong Tribal Leaders here in North Dakota," said Scott Davis, Executive Director of the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.  "If you don't know about something you might fear it, therefore you might avoid it.  We don't want anybody to do that.  We want people to learn about our culture, experience our culture, and embrace our culture," added Annette Mennem, Director of Minot State's Native American Center Director.

The Cultural Celebration at Minot State continues tomorrow and Thursday and on November 20th.  For a full list of events visit www.MinotStateU.edu.
