Veterans in Williston honored at the New Armory

Posted: Updated:

Everyday men and women in the armed forces put their lives on the line to protect our country.

And everyday we're thankful to those who are serving and have served, but every year on November 11th we take one day to express our gratitude.

There were ceremonies all over Williston this today, including one at the new armory. The armed forces dates back hundreds of year, and one active duty member says to understand Veterans day you have to look back at history.

"The 11th day of the 11th hour of the 11 month is important because in 1918 that us when a cease fire was signed putting an end to the hostilities of world war 1," said Captain Brock Yelton of the United States Air Force.

Captain Yelton is stationed at the Minot Air Force Base, and was the guest speaker at the ceremony this morning.

"Whether you wear the uniform today or you wore it decades ago, veterans everywhere represent unwavering dedication and exemplify the highest ideals of service to our nation," Yelton added.

Veterans from every branch, and several different wars were present this morning. One retired Air Force vet says he enjoys the comradery between other veterans.

"I have a lot of good friends that served during world war 2, they're old enough to be my dads, but I have a close friendship with them because I understand what they went through they know what we went through in Vietnam," said Sergeant Retired Robert Evans.

Evans served four years on active duty, and worked with the Air Force afterwards. The middle school band played several songs this morning. Including playing each branches song, while members of that branch were recognized.

Evans "What's really nice to see now a days though is that we have the young people participating in the program, we have the middle school band," added Evans.

He says this is a good way for young people to better understand Veterans Day. Captain Yelton says our country will continue to defend itself from its enemies.

"We must never forget those who paid for our freedom, be it with life or limb," Yelton added.

Both Yelton and Evans say thank you to all who have served and who are serving.
