Safe Holiday Shopping is Smart Shopping

Posted: Updated:

The holiday season is here and now it's more important than ever to be aware of your surroundings and belongings.

Petty crimes in the Bismarck-Mandan area are becoming more of a problem. Crimes of opportunity are twice as likely to happen during the holiday season with people leaving keys in the ignition, valuables in plain sight, and their car doors unlocked.

"Christmas shopping is also creating targets of opportunity," says Lt. Dwight Offerman of the Bismarck Police Department. "We had one family went in, got a great big load of presents, came out, put them in the car, and went back to finish their shopping. Came back out and the first load was gone. Had about 35 hundred dollars worth of gifts.

Bismarck Police say the best way to avoid being robbed is to be aware of your surroundings, hide your valuables, and lock your cars. Offerman also says just use common sense and you'll avoid being a victim.
