Officials Suggest Giving the Gift of Emergency Preparedness

Posted: Updated:

It's Winter Weather Advisory Week. The Department of Transportation is using it as an opportunity to emphasize the importance of playing it safe during the winter.

The weather can be unpredictable at times; however, the holiday season isn't. That's why officials of the Bismarck Emergency Operation Center had the idea of giving emergency preparedness kits as holiday gifts.

You can purchase completed emergency kits from the Triple A and Red Cross. Or you can create your own through local hardware and sporting good stores.

"The blankets and the warm clothes, that applies to your vehicle and home. That's a good starting point. If you're looking at traveling, you know you really have to have the ice scraper so you can keep your windows clear. Some of the other items like the cell phone, if you have that obviously, you want to bring that along. So that you can communicate if something happens," says Gary Stockert.

The emergency center lists life saving stocking stuffers on their website, bismarck.org/emergencymanagement. While these items are helpful, it is still important to plan ahead.

"Start looking at what you have around your house. Do you have an extra flashlight? Do you have extra batteries? Do you have non-perishable foods in your pantry that you can put in your kit? Just grab a large tote and start filling it from thing you have in your house," says Mary Senger.

The NDDOT also recently launched a free app for smartphones and tablets that updates users on highways conditions across the state.
