Line Paving Way for Lakers into Semifinals

Posted: Updated:
Only four teams remain in the Class A playoffs sitting just two wins away from lifting the state championship trophy in Fargo next weekend. One of those teams is the Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers. Coach James Johnson has led the Lakers to a 10-0 record and a region championship.

DLB beat Velva last Saturday in a knock 'em down, drag 'em out type of football game. The Lakers ran for nearly 200 yards against the Aggie defense showcasing their dominant rushing attack. Alex Davy and Eric Knutson are both legitimate weapons in the backfield for the red white and blue. It all starts up front.

"What stands out is basically a young group of kids that when we started back in August, we had a huge question mark about. Those kids have prided themselves in improving each day and each week. They have. They've worked really hard through the season and it's real obvious they've gotten better each week. I think they played their finest game last Saturday," Johnson says.

"We just go out and tell each other to play hard, stick together, play as a team, block to the whistle, do our job and get it done," sophomore lineman Jayden Gunville says.

"Our offensive line is a family. They kept pushing and Alex Davy, the fullback, isolated the linebackers and let me go free," running back Eric Knutson says.

DLB hosts Hazen at 1:30 Saturday from Des Lacs for the right to go to the state championship.
