BSC Hosting JFK Symposium

Posted: Updated:

Fifty years ago this month, President John F Kennedy was shot and killed.  Bismarck State College is hosting a symposium this week to remember the President's legacy.

President John F Kennedy was shot and killed on November 22nd, 1963 while traveling in a motorcade with his wife Jacqueline.

"Well I know it's 50 years but to me it's like it was yesterday," said former secret service agent Clint Hill.

Hill grew up in Washburn. He was a secret service agent to the first lady, and his priority was to protect to her when the president was first shot.
And he's talking about his experiences during that time this week at Bismarck State College.

"It was one of those days that everybody remembers and everybody knows exactly where they were," said Hill.

While the assassination will be discussed at the symposium, the main focus is the legacy the president left behind.

"This is probably the last big anniversary when a majority of people who were alive that day still remember. On the 100th most people will be gone," said historian Clay Jenkinson.

Part of his legacy is his involvement with the space program and getting a man on the moon.

"Apollo had a very important psychological affect on the Soviet leadership. They had tried to go to the moon to demonstrate that communism was the best thing since sliced bread and they failed and we succeeded," said former Astronaut Harrison Schmitt.

Which he said was important in eventually ending the cold war.

The event runs through Thursday.
It is sold out but starting tomorrow, it can be viewed online at http://jfk.bscsymposium.org/index.html

Tune in on the 22nd when we will be airing a more in depth special on the former president, his accomplishments and a look back on the day he was killed.
