Wanted Man Arrested Following Church Robbery

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (12:30 a.m. CT): Billy Varner has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his wife and mother in Illinois, NBC 5 Chicago tells us.

An armed man interrupted Saturday evening mass at the church of St. Michael in Ray. Police say 54-year-old Billy Varner of Illinois told the priest to walk around the congregation and have the people put money in a plastic bag.

When he drove off towards Williston on Highway 2, some members of the church followed him until police took over the chase.

But he didn't get very far. Varner was arrested after a short pursuit near Williston.

"He was taken into custody. The van he was driving was reported stolen out of Illinois. The detectives out of Illinois got a hold of us, and immediately flew out here because Mr. Varner was suspected in some deaths in Illinois," says Detective Caleb Fry, Williams County Sheriff's Department.

Varner is expected to be charged with four counts of first degree murder in Illinois tomorrow.
