Colored Contact Lenses Pose Risks

Posted: Updated:

For many, Halloween means dressing up from head to toe.  Whether its wigs, fangs, or crazy contacts, people go all out for all Hallows Eve.  But, what many people may not know is there are many dangers associated with those colored contact lenses.

Lenses come in a variety of designs and colors and are a popular Halloween costume accessory.

But, when the contact moves, your vision can be obscured, because there is only a small pupil to see through.

"They are manufactured with the color on the back side, so every time you blink or move your eye that rubs up against your eye and you're covered, so it irritates it a little bit.  So, they are not a long-term wear/use type of lens," says optical sales manager Stephanie Stripe, Vision Galleria.

Since the colored lenses are a prosthetic device, they need to be fitted by profession optometrists.  Buying these contact lenses from Halloween shops or beauty shops without a prescription is discouraged.  Those vendors are not authorized to sell such a product.
