Robotics Team Prepares for Competition

Posted: Updated:

It might not be a rock 'em sock 'em robot, but Dickinson High School students' robotic creation can do a lot more than throw some punches.  At Dickinson High School, one team is known as the BEST. That's short for the Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology team. And they're gearing up today for a major competition this weekend.

It looks like it was the work of professional engineers, but Dickinson High School students built this robot.

"It really teaches a lot of hands on skills with technology and design, and applies what you learn in school to the real world," says student Jackson Smith.

The students are part of the DHS BEST team. The BEST program is a nationwide initiative that tries to get students interested in technology careers.

"It's multi-dimensional. It's taking every piece of academic work that they do and mixing it with a competitive sport environment and taking in extra-curriculars like construction and welding," says advisor Desirae Tibor.

The team builds the robot to compete against other schools in tasks like picking up rings and placing them on hooks.

"We have six weeks to design, build and test our robots to try and perform these tasks," says Jackson.

And when competition time comes, the teams bring everything from signs to cheerleaders.

"It's a lot like a volleyball game or a basketball game or a football game, because the robots compete head on with other robots," says Desirae.

"We have to create a mascot and what our mascot will wear, we have to create cheers," says student Karina Perusquia.

And there's more to the competitions than robots.

"It covers all aspects of a business and the development of a product. So it'll be very helpful for the future," says student Mariah Jorda.

The BEST program has four more components, including marketing presentations and ten by ten foot exhibit. The Dickinson team is building its exhibit in the school's woodshop.

"We have to make it match all of our marketing stuff, all our spirit and sportsmanship stuff have to match it too. So, everything has to go together," says student Macensie Lange.

The team's exhibit will be on display this Friday at Dickinson State's student center starting at 2 p.m. The robotics competition will take place Saturday at Trinity High School.

Seven other schools are competing in this year's competition. They include Hagen Junior High School, Hettinger Public School, Sidney High School, Sawyer Public Schools, Belfield Public School, Trinity High School, and Killdeer Public Schools.
