Burleigh County Hosts National Cocker Championship

Posted: Updated:

English Cocker spaniel owners from across the country are in Burleigh county this week to take part in the National Cocker Championship.

Alan Wilson and his wife have been competing with their dogs for about twelve years.

"The children were grown up, we needed to have an activity. We love being outdoors, so we decided, we looked at some field dogs and the English Field Cockers were just the best and we just thought they would be the most fun of all, " said Wilson.

And they've been doing well. Two years ago their now 6 year old cocker, Quinn won the national championship.

"We worked hard to get there. My wife runs my dog because I was working and she had spare time so she did very very well and we worked together as a team, hunting and training and it was just a wonderful experience," Wilson added.

So they brought Quinn back this year to compete against nearly 80 other cockers.
The dogs will participate in up to five trials, which include hunting birds and retrieving them after the birds were shot.

"The last series is a water series where the dog has to retrieve the bird from the water upon command," said chairman Rodney Beck.

Beck has his own dog in the competition and says it's hard work getting a dog ready to compete.

"She's a high powered dog and there's a lot of effort going into training this dog. A lot of these dogs are professionally trained and then we as owners will assist and work our dogs as we can," said Beck.

And they can be trained a variety of ways...even by learning to retrieve and bring back a tennis ball.

"There's nothing better than going outdoors walking in the field training our dogs. It's wonderful, it brings you closer together. The kids are gone so the dogs kinda take place of the kids and it just works out really really well," said Wilson.

The competition continues through Saturday and then the top dog will be named.

The public is welcome to attend, but you must wear an orange vest or hat to take part.

The event is located a half mile south of Lincoln road on 223rd Street SE.
