Deadly Gas Goes Undetected in Many Homes

Posted: Updated:
Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers in the US, and it's more prevalent than you might think.

It's a naturally-occurring, invisible odorless gas that's present in 2/3 of North Dakota homes, and it's impossible to tell if you've been exposed.

"Radon comes from the decomposition of Uranium," says ACE Inspections Owner, Mike Wilson. "It's a gas that comes through the ground and comes and pushes against the bottom of your foundation. Comes in to any crack, the sump well, and settles in your basement."

And now that winter is on the way, the chance of having radon in your home is even greater.

"Your home is closed up and your house turns in to a big a big heat stack," says Wilson. "So, that hot air rises, it draws radon from the ground and pulls it in to your house."

One option for testing, is a radon monitor. It's placed at bed height for 48 hours and then projects instant results. Radon monitors are used by professionals, so another option is a home test kit. They're simple to use and are free from the Department of Health.

"With these ones, they've got a little hook," says Radon Coordinator, Justin Otto. "Just hang it from the ceiling with a piece of string. And they talk about the breathing zone in these test kits. Two to six feet is what they roughly recommend hanging it from."

Testing for radon now, may save your life later.
