Salvation Army Hosts Coats for Kids

Posted: Updated:

This morning, the Salvation Army kicked off its annual three-day event, Coats for Kids. Having received an estimated 15,000 winter items for Bismarck-Mandan area families in need. And volunteers are expecting no less than 70 families per day.

The Coats for Kids event received numerous donations of hats, coats and other items to help families keep warm this winter.

For the next three days, the Salvation Army will be busy helping families prepare for winter. Coats for Kids has been helping keep families warm for more than ten years.

"It's really nice to have them walk away from here with the gear that they need. a lot of times it's to send their kids to school. The kids can't get on the buses without heavy coats and snow pants. A lot of the parents work, and some of them outside, and they need heavy coats," says director Helen Winstryg.

Turitto's Dry Cleaners began collecting winter coats in August at stores and at Dan's Super Markets. The coats were dry cleaned and then given to the Salvation army. People also  donated boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. Everything was being sorted and organized for the three day event.

"You get excited. You know, you can't wait for that door to open for your first people to come in. And you know, yeah you get an adrenaline rush. I guess. It is nice. It is, it's nice to be a volunteer," says volunteer Donna Schauer.

With the help of volunteers, families can come in and find hats, gloves, and scares. And a coat for the winter ahead. An added, helpful jump start to the event, Peace Lutheran Church, donated more than 70 brand new child size coats.

"It's wonderful to be abel to say, 'Look it you guys! Come in. They're brand new and they're all kinds of shapes, and sizes, and colors.' Yeah, so it's great you know to help and give back," says coat drive organizer Sasha Iverson, Peace Lutheran Church.

Peace Lutheran had originally collected money for the Coats for Kids drive last year, but missed the deadline. The church then took the money and began purchasing new coats for this year's Coats for Kids event.

Along with the coats, Peace Lutheran Church was also able to donate more than $350 to the Salvation Army. The Coats for Kids drive will continue on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
