Physical Therapy Students Host Homerun Heroes Event

Posted: Updated:

Homerun Heroes Games is in it's eighth year. This three week series gives children with moderate to sever physical needs a chance to play baseball with University of Mary baseball players, physical therapy students and their friends.

"We wanted to serve the community in a way that hasn't been done before. So, these kids might not have been able to play baseball or softball in the summer season. So, we wanted to give them a chance out here.I was looking through pictures today of the last couple of weeks, and it just brought a smile to my face, because every kid was having such a great time," says Marley Zachmann.

Each child is paired with a physical therapy student. And the students say they get just as much out of the experience as the children do.

"As a physical therapist, I'm to take form it that it'll help me like work on my communication skills when someone is disabled. Even children to help take them through a simple task. And it helps me work on my patience also," says physical therapy student Kayla Jessen.

Some kids, like Carter, come back every year.

"Carter's been with the Homerun Heroes program for four years now I believe. And he just loves it. It's a time for him to come out and play baseball in a non-competitive arena and everybody has fun. Everybody wins," says mother Amy Dahmus.

Especially for, Grant, who has hit two homeruns in the last two years.

"It's so fun. And the kids can play for fun. And there are no outs, scoring runs, no teams. Just fun," says Grant Feist.
