MSU Hockey Players Pay It Forward

Posted: Updated:

When natural disasters hit communities, people usually come together to support one another. And, that's certainly the case for Minot State University's hockey team.

When they're not on the ice, they're trying to make a difference. After all, that's what a team is all about.

"You kind of challenge your team as a family. And, it's interesting whenever something happens as a tragedy how they come together," says head coach Wade Regier.

A tragedy all too familiar for some of the players.

"I was expecting to move into my own place just living with my roommates and then the flood hit. And, it was kind of a world win of emotions," says goalie Riley Hengen.

"Luckily a few guys on the team took me in last year because I was supposed to move in with another guy on the team, but we couldn't move in. So, I lived on three separate guys' couches for the first three months," says defenseman Mitchell Peeke.

The MSU hockey team is playing Colorado State and the University of Colorado at the end of the month. And, they wanted to give something back to them after they experienced such devastation themselves back in 2011.

"The whole ordeal was absolutely tragic here in Minot. So, we totally know exactly what's going on in Colorado," says Regier.

For the "Power of 100" service project, students and faculty are currently encouraged to donate a minimum of $10 to the Colorado Chapter of the American Red Cross.

At practice, the Beavers work hard on the ice. And that's something that Coach Regier wants his boys to put forth in the community.

"I think it's one of those principles that you certainly want to strive to be as a hockey program, but you know that there are bigger things in life. And, that's certainly helping out other people. And, I think the guys feel a big appreciation for that," says Regier.

For Coach Reiger and his players, they're not just shooting for one goal this season. The money will be presented to the Colorado State University Hockey team at next week's game.
