Tech Talk: Tablets vs. PCs

Posted: Updated:

Desktop computers and laptops may soon be things of the past. Tablets are becoming increasingly popular. They're highly portable and compact. And they can benefit the person on-the-go.

Today's technology has made personal tablets more affordable and more portable than ever.
And it's making an impact on the laptop and personal computer market.

"It's that convenience of having that technology everywhere you want to go. And tablets tend to do that a little better than laptops," says Mike Martine, Best Buy.

The handheld devices can now run software that was once reserved for PCs, including Microsoft Office. And several accessories are available to help give your tablet a more PC-feel. But Martine says tablets aren't for everybody. It all depends on what you plan to use it for.

"If you're a hardcore gamer, I'd still recommend either a laptop or a desktop, because they still have the bigger processor and more ram. So, those games like Diablo III or any of those fancy games, you're going to be able to handle. Whereas on a tablet, if you're just doing basic word processing on the go or internet browsing everywhere you want to be, something like a tablet is going to have that portability versus laptops and PCs [that] are going to have more of the performance factors in them," says Martine.

It may not be long before tablets catch up to their ancestors. But the devices have a little competition of their own.

"A lot of the phones can do a lot of the things a tablet can do. And they're getting into those sizes with the Note III, that it can pretty much be your tablet if you want it to," says Martine.

Martine anticipates some new tablets will be released this fall.  And he reminds shoppers to choose their tablet wisely. Because you generally get what you pay for.
