Bowman Plans New Hospital

Posted: Updated:

Emergency services in Western North Dakota are now in greater demand because of the population growth, so the hospital in Bowman is working on a twenty-five million dollar plan to keep up.

Southwest Healthcare in Bowman was built in 1951, and the hospital is in desperate need of a renovation.

Southwest Healthcare CEO Becky Hansen says, "The community needs better healthcare, better facilities for that healthcare, and we want to provide that for the future."

And the future could be here soon. The USDA committed fifteen million dollars this month to building a new hospital, and last week Southwest got word that the Bank of North Dakota approved a low-interest loan to cover the rest of the twenty-five million dollar project.

Principal Architect John McLean says, "I think Bowman as a community is being proactive. They've recognized healthcare as a major economic driver in the community as well as a need based on the industry that's developed around us."

The new hospital will be forty-one thousand square feet -- about fourteen thousand square feet bigger than what it is now, but space isn't the only issue.

Southwest Healthcare Medical Director Forrest Lanchbury says, "One of the big problems that we have here is that our nursing home is located a few blocks away."

The new hospital will solve that problem, too. They're building it next to the nursing home.

McLean adds, "What we're going to do is we're going to consolidate all healthcare services onto one campus, so it brings everybody under one roof, which improves operating efficiencies."

And that one roof will also cover new emergency rooms. Right now, the hospital only has one. The new building will have four.

Lanchbury adds, "Just real positive that it's going to have a positive effect on the community and we're going to be able to better serve their healthcare needs."

The architects say they hope to start construction next summer and construction will take about two years.

The new hospital will also have physical therapy rooms, a clinic, a lab, and imaging services. No word yet on what Southwest Healthcare plans to do with the old hospital building.
