Brother & Sister Work in Williston

Posted: Updated:

While it is now common for many to flock to Williston for employment, rarely does a brother-sister duo make the trip. Angela Stoczynski, from Illinois, struggled to find a permanent teaching position she loved.

"I had been out of college in Illinois for about two and a half years. I was substitute teaching, long term subbing, a paraprofessional and I just wasn't finding what I wanted," explained Angela, currently a 7th grade math teacher at Williston Middle School.

When Angela decided expand her search to the Bakken, she immediately found results.

"I kind of started to open up my horizons and my search and then my brother found out that he was still going to stay in North Dakota and then I was like you know what, why don't I apply out there to his new location as well. So, they had openings out here because everything is expanding and more kids are coming and teaching is in demand," added Angela.

Angela's brother, Scott Stoczynski, while fairly new to Williston has been in North Dakota since 2007. He played football for the NDSU bison and helped them take the title in 2011. Scott now is a member of the North Dakota highway patrol.

"I was told, if there's a place to learn, it's Williston. You get a lot of experience right away and that's exactly what I'm getting.

It's definitely a big change. I mean, not only is it six hours further from Chicago and further from home. Just away from my comfort zone. You know, I got used to being in Fargo," explained Scott.

It was Scott who suggested Angela move to Williston to continue her search for employment. While it was a big adjustment, Angela is grateful for the experience and just thrilled to be teaching.

"Teaching is so influential because I have all these children looking up to me. It's so empowering to me. So I'm grateful that I have taken the chance to come out here and fulfill my own dreams. And I'm just going with it everyday and am just happy to be here," said Angela.

In their free time, Angela is a volleyball coach at Williston, and Scott helps coach football. Both of the Stoczynskis are taking their futures day by day and are excited with the opportunities that lie ahead.
