Doing Our Bit for the Cure

Posted: Updated:

When you think of drilling for oil, you may not think of the color pink, but one Minot oilfield service company is painting their equipment that color for a good cause.

Baker Hughes is raising awareness for breast cancer with their "Doing our bit for the cure" campaign by painting 500 drill bits pink.

Baker Hughes already made their own donation of $100,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, but these pink drill bits are getting attention.

"When they go out to a drilling rig the guys see and they ask what they mean, we explain and obviously customers know what that's for. But, there might be some guys thinking well I don't want to rent a pink drill bit, but once they know the reason why we did it, they're definitely for it and excited about it," says Adam Braunberger, North Dakota area sales manager.

The Minot area has only received two of the pink bits so far, because they're in such high demand.

"These are world wide, so, to get one of five hundred is pretty special. We take it out to a customer that would be interested in renting it, they may have had a loved one or even someone from the rig that was affected by breast cancer so it's kind of special, so we hand pick who and where we're going to do this," says Braunberger.

A drill bit is used to cut through rock formations to extract oil. The pink bits may be unusual to see in the oil field, but they're getting a positive reaction.

Because of all the success, Baker Hughes is hoping to do the campaign again next October. There should be about eight pink bits drilling in our area by the end of the month.
