Public Reacts to Superintendent's Actions

Posted: Updated:

Student safety is a major concern, especially in light of school shootings across the country. So when Tioga Superintendent D'Wayne Johnston brought a gun to school, he says it was to protect the students. However, not everyone saw it that way.

Moms Demand Action Chapter Leader Susan Beehler said, "Why would he feel the need to surpass law enforcement  and take the law into his own hands? Because that's really what he was doing...so brining a gun into school was illegal."

The organization Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America said that Johnston should have been fired immediately. The group fights against lax gun laws, promoting gun safe environments. Similarly, the Department of Public Instruction spoke against allowing concealed weapons in schools.

Director of Safe and Healthy Schools Valerie Fischer said, "By being preventative, we're really sending a message to all parents and all schools as well as students that our schools area a safe place to be. It's a good place to be, it's an adequate place to learn."

The DPI received more than 4 and a half million dollars in grants to improve school safety, such as moving school offices closer to the front doors and installing safety glass. But some say that may not be enough. After we put news of Johnston's resignation on KFYR-TV's Facebook page, most of the comments supported him.

Tina Miller said, "I want to thank that man!! I would rather teachers have guns to protect my kids than just a wooden desk and door. if these idiots shooting in schools knew teachers were armed they may change their mind knowing it's all the staff vs. them. WAY TO GO SIR!!"

Nathan Haaland said, "He can come to my kids school anytime. I would feel safer with someone trained to use a firearm that is looking out for my kids."

And Chris Feller said, "Why is he retiring? He should be given a raise and a bonus for showing some initiative to do something positive!"
