More Young Adults Move to North Dakota

Posted: Updated:

A decade ago we were talking about college graduates needing to leave the state to find work, but now just the opposite is happening. More and more new graduates are heading to North Dakota after school.

MoneyRates.com ranked North Dakota number one this year on its list of best states for young people. And it has a lot to do with job opportunities.

Bismarck may not seem like a hotspot to someone from just outside of Portland, Oregon. But for Matthew Garrison, it was the best place to go.

"The job market here is astronomically better than anywhere else in the country right now," says Garrison.

And Garrison isn't the only young person who thinks that.

"I actually have quite a few friends from Oregon that have moved to the area because of the job market here," says Garrison.

MoneyRates.com says North Dakota is the best state in the country for young adults based on criteria such as rental availability and cost, number of bars and pubs per capita and unemployment rates.

"With North Dakota having somewhat of a labor shortage, in that there's more available positions than there are resumes, a young worker would certainly have an opportunity across all occupational groups," says Michael Ziesch, Job Service of North Dakota.

The state's unemployment rate is just 5.1 percent for people ages 20-24.

"In North Dakota, the low unemployment rate here would be less competition than there is in some areas of the country for young workers," says Ziesch.

Low education costs were also a big factor. In fact, that's part of the reason Garrison moved here.

"I decided to come back here and go to school because school is cheaper out here than it is on the west coast," says Garrison.

Garrison is working at a bank while he finishes school, and says he is planning to stay in North Dakota.

"The money that I'm making here is not anywhere equivalent to what I would make in Oregon, and I've kind of built a life here, so it would be kind of hard to pick up and move," says Garrison.

A few other states in our region also made the list. South Dakota was number two, while Nebraska and Montana came in at three and four.
