Dan's Garden: Hunger Garden

Posted: Updated:

This week our traveling garden is in Bismarck on the corner of Sweet and South Hannifin at the Hunger Garden, where all these people grow produce and give it away to different places like the Ruth Meier's House and the Abused Adult Resource Center.  It's been a big growing year because of all the rain.

Karen Erins is kind of in charge of these Hunger Gardens, and she's told me there's been a few gardeners already that have given away over three hundred pounds of produce.  But this garden's going to shrink, because they're going to expand the ball park by next year, and there'll be space here but also at Tately Park on Airport Road in Bismarck.  So, it's going to keep going.

I just want to tell you about these Peruvian Purple Passion Potatoes, which is something quite new, and it's my first year growing them.  It's high in antioxidants and low in calories.  They say about nine potatoes only have about 100 calories.  And they're great boiled, like mashed potatoes, or they're great for potato salad, because they stay firm.  And they're great for hashbrowns.  So, it's something you might want to think about growing someday.

Next week, we're going to have our traveling garden back at the nursery and we're going to show the fruits of our labor of things we grew this year, and until then, good gardening.
