Good Works: Volunteer Librarian

Posted: Updated:

When you've really enjoyed your career, it's difficult to stay away after retirement. That's especially true when you work with children. Meet a former school teacher who jumped at the opportunity to interact with young people again.

Avis Breding asks about creating a lunch bunch with Mhyre Elementary fifth graders, in which they discuss a book they read during lunch time. It's just an example of how this volunteer can inspire young minds. Once a month, she reads books suggested by the librarian and tells them just enough to entice them.

"If they have an idea what the book is about, they're more apt to check it out. And it's always fun to see them go up and sign up for the book after we're done," says Avis.

"Let's do The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. Do you know what incorrigible means?"

"It's another influence for the kids. Another person to get them excited about reading because they see me all the time. But it's somebody else to get them excited," says Jeanette Mhyre librarian Charlotte Sather.

Of course, Avis is no novice here. She spent her career teaching at Mhyre and retired eleven years ago. But that doesn't mean her enthusiasm has waned.

"I kind of like Dr. Suess' quote that you don't know where a book will take you. It can take you any place you want to go. It can take you to other countries. It can take you to other parts of the world if you read," says Avis.

And in anticipation of Book Talk with Mrs. Breding, the library sets up displays to sign up for the books mentioned or other books by the same authors. And it seems to work because these youngsters are eager to get their hands on something to read.

"In the Bismarck school district, you can order books from other libraries. So I try to fill those requests as soon as possible, so the kids can get the books that they're excited about right away," says Sather.

Avis also hosts a book club for adults at the Bismarck Public Library.
