Tech Talk: DSLRs As Video Cameras

Posted: Updated:

Many photographers will tell you the best camera you have is the one in your hand. Which is why professors at the University of Mary are teaching students how to get the most out of their digital cameras.

"So, we have our students buy cameras when they take photography class. And most of them take that their freshman year," says associate professor Mike Chaussee.

But they're not just teaching the skill set as a matter of convenience. Associate professor Mike Chaussee says there are a lot of advantages to turning this into a video camera.

"Size, portability, and I think, the lenses. The lenses really help you capture beautiful pictures. I mean, the pictures you take, and when I say pictures I mean video... the video you take with a DSLR camera is fantastic. It looks great," says Chaussee.

Changing the look of your video is as simple as changing a lens or adjusting your depth of field. But shooting motion pictures isn't without challenges.

"If you're shooting outside, it's sometimes impossible to see what's on the LCD screen. And most DSLR cameras won't allow you to look through this viewfinder as well when it's in video mode," says Chaussee.

Recording good audio requires additional equipment.  If you're looking to buy a DSLR, make sure it has a microphone input.

"So, like, this microphone here will fit right on the hot shoot and plug into the side. And now, we're overriding the built-in microphone on the camera to a pretty high-end shotgun microphone," says Chaussee.

In the past, video equipment was much larger.  Which is why most students appreciate the lighter, more portable alternative.

Chaussee says while the equipment has changed, most of basics remain the same.
And he reminds his students to pay attention to lighting and always use a tripod.
