Boys Go Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Posted: Updated:

Breast Cancer strikes many more women than men, but that doesn't mean men aren't joining in the fight against the disease. In Dickinson, a group of boys are showing their support in a hairy sort of way.

A group of third grade boys in Dickinson are doing something a little out of the ordinary to support breast cancer awareness month. They're expecting to get some comments from classmates, but they're proud of what they decided to do.

Whoever said only girls wear pink, obviously never met this group of Dickinson friends. These eight-year-olds have plenty of confidence to wear pink on their shirts, but they didn't stop there. They wanted a more permanent pink look. So they decided to dye their hair pink. And not just because they think it looks cool.

"Because of all the people that have breast cancer, and all the people that are trying to get rid of it, all the people that died. We're just doing it to support them to make it through and stuff like that," says Aidan Rodakowski.

The idea came from this boy, Rhowan. His mom own's Euphoria Salon and Spa in Dickinson.

"He said, 'You know, I want to do that. I want to help support that awareness, but it'd be a lot cooler, Mom, if I could do that with some of my friends,'" says his mother, Candace.

And the event is personal for some of the boy's families.

"His grandmother has battled cancer twice. His great grandmother has battled cancer once. So, it just means a lot to us to show our support any way that we can," says mother Sammy Tuhy.

While some of the parents say they were surprised at the idea of pink hair, all of them say they're proud of the boys' courage.

"I keep telling them tough guys wear pink," says Candace.

Pinktober specials will continue throughout the rest of the month at Euphoria Salon.
