Sanford AirMed Adds Specialty Teams

Posted: Updated:

Sanford AirMed in Bismarck is already transporting people who are critically ill or injured.  And now, there's good news for parents of newborns who need immediate care.

If you live in a place where getting to the hospital quickly is already challenging, imagine having a sick newborn that needs immediate care. It's a terrifying experience. Well, Sanford AirMed has now added O.B. and N.I.C.U. special teams to their flight service.

"Our job is to go get those high-risk babies, premature, full-term, having problems after delivery. And so, we'll go out to outlying hospitals that just aren't equipped to handle those babies and bring them back here for treatment," says neonatal nurse practitioner Keeta Knaup.

Within minutes after receiving a call about a sick patient, a helicopter can be launched as long as they are within a one hundred-fifty mile radius of Bismarck.

"We would go Dickinson, Williston, Watford City, Jamestown, about that distance for babies. Bowman. We have experts here to take care of those babies. Just that extra-special care that they need that those outlying hospitals don't have," says Knaup.

"Provide a high level of care for that patient for a very short amount of time, versus going by ground ambulance when they're going to be out of a hospital for a long period of time. We can get them from point A to point B very quickly," says flight paramedic Adam Parher.

Now, inside the helicopter comes a portable incubator-to keep the baby warm, a ventilation system-to monitor the baby's breathing and a cardio respiratory monitor as well.

It's a service that adds some comfort to those in rural areas, but more importantly, can save some lives.

The Sanford AirMed fleet is made up of four helicopters and four airplanes.
