Financial Seminar Benefits High School Students

Posted: Updated:

National surveys show the lack of financial knowledge among high school students sets them up to make financial mistakes early in their adult life, which can have life-long consequences.

That's why Town and Country Credit Union along with Minot State University and the NDSU Extension Service hosted a financial seminar today for high school students.

$MRTZ Seminar is a one-day free personal finance seminar for area high school seniors to talk with current college students and to learn more about the basics of credit cards, financial aid, and living on a budget.

"It's important for us to focus on high school students because they're soon going to be turning 18, graduating, moving out of the house, and all of the sudden, sometimes those purse strings from mom and day get cut off and then you start thinking about their own personal finances and how they're going to make those decisions that will impact their financial future," says Shannon Webster, Town and Country Union.

Three hundred students from 16 different high schools attended today's seminar.  Since 2009, more than 1,000 students have taken part in the program.
