Inside Business: Moritz Sport and Marine

Posted: Updated:

As winter approaches and the river level continues to drop, you might think that business for a boating store would be winding down, but that's not the case at Moritz Sport and Marine in Mandan.

Tim Mortiz says they are just as busy hauling and servicing boats in the fall as they are in the spring, maybe busier.

"It's one of our busiest times of year, we winterize about 1,500 boats," says Moritz.

In addition to servicing hundreds of boats in the fall, Moritz says they're gearing up for the seasons that are on their way

"We do watercraft, we do snowmobiles, we do four wheelers, we do off-road, anything you can think of."

The Moritz Brothers and their father opened up for business 16 years ago primarily as a boat dealership. They soon expanded into other recreational vehicles, apparel and supplies. Moritz says the industry has changed dramatically since they first opened, and the increased use of computers has affected all areas of the business.

"Technology has impacted our business quite a bit. It's not just the old two-stroke motor anymore. All my mechanics have hundreds of hours of schooling, just to learn how to test the motor," says Moritz.

Moritz says the local market has changed dramatically as well. Their business has grown by about 20 percent since the oil boom in western North Dakota just a few years ago. And he is pleased that the store and it's 30 employees have been able to keep up with that growth.

"I'd just be happy to maintain where we're at. I guess I'd call it a blessing to make it this far in the industry."

And that means stocking up with more four wheelers and snowmobiles for the off-season, and putting the boats away for the winter.
