Farmers Union Voices Concerns About Government Shutdown

Posted: Updated:

As the U.S. government remains in shutdown mode, North Dakota Farmers Union members are concerned on the impact it is having on livestock producers.

"After the storm in North Dakota last week, many producers saw over 20 to 30 inches of snow that caused the death of an undetermined number of cattle. The severity of the storm caught many ranchers off guard and they are now faced with substantial livestock losses," says North Dakota Farmer's Union President Woody Barth.

Last week, some areas saw record amounts of unseasonably early snowfall. With government agencies operating in limited capacity, the residents of these areas were lacking information and saw delays in reports and warnings in order to be prepared for the extreme conditions experienced.

Barth believes it is critical that Congress pass a clean Continuing Resolution, get the government working again, and also pass a five year, comprehensive farm bill this year.

He says farmers cannot afford this standstill any longer.
