Residential and Commercial Center Opens in Jamestown

Posted: Updated:

Housing is needed in many communities across the state and there's one community that was celebrating the addition of new units this afternoon.

Usually the idea of staying in a hospital isn't something to be excited about. But that's not the case, now that the former Jamestown hospital has been remodeled.

"It seemed like an opportunity both it's location in the neighborhood and it was really so well built, even though you're going from a healthcare facility to housing and other community uses it's just really a solid building and it seemed to be a use that would fit," says Jessica Thomasson with the Lutheran Social Services Center.

The remodel took about two years to complete and it features 51 housing units. Some residents started moving in several months ago, including Jan Van Dellen, who was one of the first.

"I think as we get older it's important to be with a lot of people our age, so it answered my wants," says VanDellen.

The center is for anyone 55 years or older but it is NOT  an assisted living community, which was exactly what some residents wanted.

Michael Chamness: "I don't want to be in a home. I take care of myself and I'm pretty self reliant and I want to live in my own place," says resident Michael Chamness.

The units are available to people of all incomes.

"Some of our units have rent assistance available for lower income tenants and some of the units you can rent regardless of your income without rent assistance. We found that that's a really positive model, not only in Jamestown but across the state. To create really a seamless housing community," says Thomasson.

The center also features several community areas that can be used by the residents, including a dining area, game room and several lounges. It also has a daycare, a wellness center and senior citizen services.

Applications for the new apartments are still being accepted. For rental packets, call 701-271-3207 or email housing@lssnd.org
