Towns Remain Without Power

Posted: Updated:

It's been a long, dark weekend for some people. The wet, heavy snow that hit some parts of the state Friday and Saturday knocked down several power lines in the southwestern part of the state. New Leipzig residents haven't had power for three days, but that's not what they're most concerned about.

Snow hasn't fallen in New Leipzig since Saturday, but three days later, it's still here.

"For the rest of the winter, this is going to be something that will wake you up and prepare for it," says New Leipzig Mayor Jerome Roehrich.

Nearly nineteen inches of snow pounded the town over the weekend, and residents have been without power for three days.

"This kind of caught us off guard. I have a generator but didn't have any gas in it," says Roehrich.

Mayor Roehrich wasn't the only one without a generator.

The Fire Department helped out the town's only grocery store to keep food from spoiling.

"Our town actually owns the grocery store, so we didn't want to lose too much. So we brought the Fire Department generator over, hooked up some freezers," says Greg Bruce, New Leipzig Fire Department.

MDU said they hoped to have power back in New Leipzig by this afternoon, but power lines just west of town are still down. But residents say the downed lines aren't even their main concern.

"Biggest problem in town is trees - just about every yard has got some kind of tree down," says Bruce.

Crews have been working all day to fix power lines and get the town out of the dark. But New Leipzig residents say they're managing for now.

"The town's pretty self-sufficient. It's not really a big deal. Everybody helped everybody," says Bruce.
