2013 Hostfest Comes to an End

Posted: Updated:

The 2013 Hostfest is  a celebration of Scandinavian and Nordic culture.  Food, arts and crafts, and demonstrations originating in other countries have been enjoyed throughout the week in the magic city.

While countries like Sweden, Denmark, and Norway may seem to be worlds away from North Dakota, the Nordic cultures are more similar to the cultures here in the Peace Garden State than you might think.  And those similarities were on display outside the State Fair Center.

"The Sami people were nomadic and they followed the reindeer just as the natives here used their teepees and followed the buffalo," says presenter, Doc Brien. "For the Sami people the white reindeer were very, very valuable and special. And for the Natives the white buffalo was sacred.  So there are many similarities. After visiting we found that there are so many similarities and we want to share that. Another example is that we have our lagalet, our bread and they have their arctic bread. So, we both have bread, we have our meats."

The 2013 Hostfest ended last night with a performance by the band Alabama.
