Roosevelt Park Zoo Prepares to close for the Winter

Posted: Updated:

Cooler temperatures mean its time for the Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot to get ready to close for the season and prepare their animals for the winter months.

"When the temperatures drop below 40 degrees either at night or during the day, we take measures to make sure the animals are comfortable and not cold," says Allison Suda, Hoofstock keeper at Roosevelt Park Zoo.

Suda prepares straw beds and checks the thermometer in the barns and cages on a daily basis.

Animals that are not used to North Dakota weather like the giraffes, zebras, and warthogs all need to head in inside; whereas the wolves, bobcats and reindeer actually prefer the cooler temperatures.

"We have shelters for them to block them from the other elements like rain and wind/ But other than that we give them beds and that's enough for them. They have thick enough coats same as the camels as well. They have access if they want it but lots of them prefer to be out in the snow," says Suda.

But, if the temperatures go above 40 degrees, the animals that were kept indoors are able to roam outside again.

Because North Dakota weather is so unpredictable, the zoo staff likes to stay prepared.

"We cut lots of trees during the summer and freeze it for the winter for the giraffes so they have brows all year round. So we take precautions like that to make sure the animals have a nice winter," says Suda.

Zoo operations plan to shut down Sunday, October 6th.

Although the zoo is shutting down, the new visitor center is still open to the public. The center will remain open all year.
