National Guard Furloughs Soldiers and Civilian Employees

Posted: Updated:

Because of the Government shutdown, many federal organizations are struggling to get by with a smaller staff, including the North Dakota National Guard. The Guard furloughed 40-percent its 1,250 soldiers, airmen and civilian employees. And even though a bill was passed in Congress to make sure members of the military are paid during the shutdown, it does not include the guard.  Representative Kevin Cramer says a fix is being worked on.

"The bill that we're passing today will in fact ensure that not only are all national guard personnel are paid, active, but it also ensures that people in active personnel  that are in training will also be paid," says Rep. Kevin Cramer.

The bill was supposed to be brought up tonight but will now be voted on tomorrow. The Adjutant General says despite the furlough and the light staff at the guard during the shut down, they are still ready to respond if needed.

"If the governor calls upon the National Guard to support a community, to support a county, we have means to be able to bring out people back using state funds. To ensure the public safety for the people of North Dakota," says Maj. Gen David Sprynczynatyk.

If the shutdown continues through the week, the guard may have to cancel drills planned for this weekend.
